Juno Beach Canada DDay Victory June 6 1944 Mark Zuehlke 9781553650508 Books

This book tells the story of the Canadians on DDay, which was a much harder struggle than I had previously believed. This is mostly told from witnesses on the ground, and while the level information is there it's not so important. What's important is understanding just how difficult a challenge these men faced and the terrible toll it took on them as they fought through surf, sand and then inland. Excellent work, and I've already bought two more of his six book series on the Canadians in WW2. Very well done.

Juno Beach Canada DDay Victory June 6 1944 Mark Zuehlke 9781553650508 Books Reviews

A heart-wrenching depiction of real people at war-- real death, real terror, real victories. It's as if you are there.
Zuehlke does a wonderful job digging into the nitty gritty of D-day for the Canadians and does quite well at linking all facets of the battle, together. A wonderful and fact driven book.
An excellent treatment of a previously neglected subject--the Canadian contribution to the Normandy D-Day landings.. Zuehlke melds a novelist's writing skills with a military historian's ability to assemble and marshal documents and veterans' recollections regarding one fifth of the landing force that broke the Atlantic Wall on June 6, 1944. The first of a series tracing the Canadian army's role in the Northwest Europe campaign into the German heartland in WW II.
Purchased this as a gift for a Canadian war buff who will be visiting Juno Beach later this year. He couldn't keep his nose out of the book the whole time of his week long visit with us. I think it may have been one of his favorite gifts.
An excellent book about Canada's participation in NW Europe. Often the Canadian contributions to the Allied success, both at Normandy and later, is drowned out by extensive coverage of the UK and US roles in defeating Nazi Germany. Clear and well written, Mr Zuehike's book is excellent. Currently starting his second book "Holding Juno" which I am confident will be as good.
A book all Canadians should read. The sacrifices and bravery of these young men should never be forgotten and wars like this one need be prevented. Zuehlke brings D-Day alive and gives voice to those who have gone before us.
Being a good red-blooded, loyal American who served in the miltary, I've read alot about Americans in World War II, Korea, the U.S. Civil War, the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. But it's hard to find good books on other countries that participated in these wars, specially in the U.S.A. It's even harder to get a fair and balanced version. This book does just that.

Mark Zuehlke writes a great history book that comes alive with archives and interviews of those who were there. This story gave a good background to the preparations and training of these troops and the courageous acts of these soldiers, sailors and airmen that recieve little to no attention in most accounts of the D-day landings. If you ask most young Americans today they don't even realize the Canadians landed at the Normandy beaches.

The follow-up book, "Holding Juno" by this author is on my short list. This is an easy, enjoyable read. The maps were also extremely helpful with follow the action of June 6th, 1944 on Juno Beach.

This book should make any Canadian proud and should put a little pride and alot of appreciation in any American's heart for our brave allies to the north.
