Dig Ten Graves eBook Heath Lowrance

Dig Ten Graves is an excellent collection of short fiction, delving always into the gritty and painful, but not shying away from humor, either. There were no duds in the collection -- which is saying something! -- but a few of the stories stood out to me as particularly good. "The Most Natural Thing in the World" may have been the one that inspired the most despair, but at the same time was a solid piece that makes the interior of the protagonist's head the only setting the reader really needs. "The Bad Little Pet" is surreal and throws doubt into the mix about the nature of reality. The end is chilling, but also shamefully satisfying, given how I felt about the main character. "Emancipation, with Teeth" has the distinction of being the funniest body horror story I've ever read. Anyhow -- I could go on, but you get the idea. This is worth far more than the $0.99 that it currently is. Take a chance and buy it. And then be sure to read it after that.

Dig Ten Graves eBook Heath Lowrance Reviews

Ever read a book, because you read just one story from the author elsewhere? Now picture everything in that book is basically better than that first story. That's what this book is. It's Heath Lowrance at his best. You got ten stories, written beautifully. Many are short but they feel like the perfect length. Like "Bleed Out" it's an ironic twist on hunting, anything else I'll tell you would ruin the story, but it's twistedly written, like a good Twilight Zone story. And I love the Twilight Zone. It's just like each piece feels right and it always keeps you guessing.

I personally know it's a good book when I can't stop telling people about the book. When my wife is like, so what happened in the story you were reading about the dog and the man trapped in the cavern? And I respond "The one where the man and dog is hungry? Well . . ." You have to read it. I just wish it was longer, maybe two more stories would have kept me more occupied, but for the price, I think I'm ripping Heath Lowrance off. Formatting wise, I'd love to see a working/linking table of contents, I think all collection should have one, so you can go back and forth. It's still a great book that everyone should read.

If you don't believe me read "Burning Bridges" for free and read his short story "A Freeway On Earth".

I'm definitely going to buy his other book The Bastard Hand.
These are some hard, tough, nasty little nuggets of hard-boiled bravado. Each story comes at you as if shot from a nail gun. In a time when the art of the short story has been left a little behind, it's rewarding to see something like 'Incident on a Rain-Soaked Corner' that makes you feel the cold chill of slipping six feet under, or feel the thrill of terror that comes with 'Emancipation, with Teeth'. My favorite, however, was the bonus story at the end, 'Battle of the Carson Hotel', for sheer bravado.

It's actually even more of a bargain, since if you keep track, someone's going to need a whole lot more than ten graves to keep up with that body count, but like Dashiel Hammett's Red Harvest, it's not the body count, but the unflinching exploration of violence that really packs a punch with this collection.
Really a great collection of short speculative fiction stories reminiscent of Lansdale's "By Bizarre Hands" and Koja's "Extremities" but newer, a very fresh take on tormented souls and the fantastic. Mostly dark and introspective, many of these stories will leave you with a desire to let it simmer in your subconscious, but once you know what Lowrance is capable of, you will also not want to wait to dive into the next one. "It Will All Be Carried Away", the first story, and probably the most mature and melancholy sets up the dominos and starts a tense chain reaction. I guarantee it will make you look back and consider old regrets. "From Here to Oblivion" is a darkly comic tome that will give you some much needed relief. These are awesome commute reads, but maybe not the best choice for the doctor's waiting room -- you'd dream up way too many scary prognosis'.
Recently saw on Heath's blog that this book was free for the and he asked for some reviews if you got the book. Well I got it so here's my end of the deal...
There are some really great stories in this collection. The collection flies out of the gate with It Will All Be Carried Away. I thought this was a great story and really set the bar pretty high for the rest of the stories. Although the bar was high, Heath continued to hit that high water mark with other great stories.
From ghost stories, to men slowly going crazy, to old school PI (ish) stories, There is a wide range of stories that all show this man has writing chops. I must admit I already liked The Bastard Hand and Miles to Little Ridge, so I knew this would be a good read.
If you have already know Mr. Lowrance's work but haven't read this, what ya waiting for? If you are unfamiliar with his work, this is a good place to start but be prepared to add his other two works to your TBR pile.
Earlier, I enjoyed reading Heath Lowrance's MILES TO LITTLE RIDGE, so I decided to try his short fiction collection, DIG TEN GRAVES. It's a true ringer, I'm happy to report. I heard the echoes of Stephen King and Mr. Poe in a psychological horror tale like "Emancipation, With Teeth" where Ernie comes to grips with his rather drab lifestyle. My favorite was "It Will Be Carried Away" which originally appeared in the fine journal CHIZINE. The narrator tells us about his past lover named Charon Whitfield who was found OD'd in the backseat of her car somewhere north of Detroit. The eerie story masterfully weaves back and forth in time shifts as we make some startling discoveries about them both. Choice dark humor arises in "From Here to Oblivion" as Henry Black has the devil of a time committing suicide before his ex's wedding date. I found a clever imagination at work in these stories, making them a lot of fun with their unexpected twists and leaps. That's what struck me throughout my reading. Terrific short fiction.
