Anchor in the Storm Waves of Freedom Sarah Sundin 9780800723439 Books

This novel by Sundin is competent as usual, yet somehow less exciting to me than some of her previous efforts. Perhaps its just me, but I didn't find Lillian particularly likable. Admirable, yes, but not likable. Her coldness was understandable, but I don't feel enough time was spent on her redeeming qualities to compensate for the negative traits she displayed. Archer, while initially sympathetic, frustrated me to no end as well. His conduct towards Lillian near the end was simply reprehensible. He may have been under a misapprehension about her, but what an utter fool he was to fall for such a transparent scheme! I lost so much respect for him in that moment that it was hard to really care about the restoration of their relationship. In the end, it is simply difficult to enjoy a novel about two characters you don't fully sympathize with... and the story is further hampered by an unbelievably obvious villian. I recommend this book as I do everything by Sundin, but if I had it to do over again I would have held out for a library copy rather than purchasing my own.

Anchor in the Storm Waves of Freedom Sarah Sundin 9780800723439 Books Reviews

Anchor in the Storm the second in the Waves of Freedom series. Set in World War II, tells the story of pharmacist Lillian Avery from Boston. She has discovered a lot of barbiturates are being fulfilled, more than any one person needs. Archer Vandenberg who is her brother's best friend has also become suspicious of drug abuse aboard the ship he works on because many sailors are falling asleep on duty. Together they find out what is going on and fall in love. I have to say that I enjoyed this book very much and am looking forward to the next book in the series.
So I knew I enjoyed Sundin as an author when I picked this book up from the library - but wow. As soon as I started it, I was drawn in. The main gal is one I identify strongly with. While I don't share her handicap, our personalities aligned very closely and she made sense to me. I read through this book SO quickly - could not put it down. And the night I finished it, I was on purchasing my own copy. Excellent book, packed with fascinating historical events and context - perfectly interwoven with a fictional story that engages the reader with ease.
I enjoy Sarah Sundin's books. I first got hooked on her books with another series which is based on the same two topics of military and World War II. So if you are used to her style of writing, you can begin to see a pattern in her style of writing. So that is why I felt that her book had some twists verses full of surprises.

This book was another great read. The development of her characters is normal, something that a person would have faced at the time of the storyline. I felt connected to the characters and their struggles without feeling as if the author had gone over the top. The storyline was steady and filled with teasers to keep you moving from chapter to chapter. The author drops hints through the story to keep you guessing and even leading you to the possible whodunit answer. So it keeps you moving from chapter to chapter until the end. Her ending is realistic in the sense that if the story was real, this ending could have happened.

Read the book.
No one brings the era of WWII alive like Sarah Sundin and in this particular story, we have two people who are both floundering emotionally as the war ramps up. Lillian Avery shows the world a spunky personality, but inside she's a mess of insecurity which makes her a pretty good match for her brother's friend, Arch Vandenburg. The handsome, smooth West Point grad comes from money - and he's pretty sure that's all women see in him.

The two are drawn together by a sinister plot that puts the men on Arch's ship in danger and puts Lillian in the crosshairs of a drug ring. As they spend time together, attraction grows, but they have to fight the wounds of their pasts if they have any chance of a future together.

There were some deep themes in this story, as the characters dealt with issues of self-worth and trusting God's plan and direction for your life. The history was woven in throughout the book incredibly well with pieces of information about the time and places dropped in seamlessly. I enjoyed the characters and, as always, look forward to the next installment in the series
I liked this second book in the series. I was already rooting for the couple in the story after reading the last. I loved really getting to know the characters through the way they gradually open up to each other and to God. I love that Arch and Lillian reach climactic events at the same time but at separate locations. This really built tension and excitement so that I didn’t even stop for sleep on my way to the last page. I would love to gush about all the things I love about this book, but you need to experience it yourself. Needless to say, I am eager to start the last book in the series to learn more about what makes them tick and how they will grow as war rages on.
I just finished this 2nd book in the Waves of Freedom series and I loved it as much or more than the first. I totally love Sarah Sundin's writing style, and the faith in God she builds in each book. Wow, how exciting this plot was, both of the parties working on uncovering the participants in a drug ring! The historical details were fascinating. The on ship battle scenes were edge-of-your-seat as usual, brilliantly written, and the tense scenes Lillian went through on shore were just as exciting, and many times I didn't see how in the world either would survive. But amazingly, the outcomes never seemed contrived or 'out there'. Sarah Sundin's books always minister to me and I come away with a nugget of something good. I pause over a passage and think... "Now, right here, I would foolishly have done or said such and such, but I see so clearly how them praying about it made such a difference!" It makes me look back on my life and see where I should have done or said things much differently. Her stories and characters never fail to inspire me to be a better, stronger Christian. As always, I couldn't put this book down. Going now to purchase book 3. ) Bravo Ms. Sundin on a job well done!
