I would actually give this a 3 1/2 star. I did enjoy this book but my biggest problem was that it seemed disjointed somehow. Carson is supposed to be Poly's boyfriend but there seemed to be nothing there. Poly would think one thing and do another. She sees Vaughn on the street and wonders if he knows what had happened the night before, meanwhile she had argued with him at the scene. Her parents say they are staying a couple days and that afternoon they are leaving. There were a few other incidences like this and it really began to bother me, but that is my quirk and may not bother most. It just made it a little hard to follow her train of thought and what was going on at times. That being said, I do love Ms. Vallere's characters, they are diversified and enjoyable.
The mystery was excellent, I didn't know who to trust. The back story of Poly's aunt was interesting and kept me guessing as to how it tied in with Poly now. I will continue on with this series, it has a good strong base and I hope that the contradictory problems are ironed out in the next.

Suede to Rest Diane Vallere Books Reviews
This is the first book in a great series. The premise is compelling. A young woman learns she inherits the fabric store her Great Aunt and Uncle owned. Great Aunt was murdered inside the store and her Uncle couldn't handle his grief so the store hasn't been touched in a decade.
Polyester Monroe is a determined and strong willed young woman. Her attachment to the store (having been born on site) makes her unwilling to quickly 'sell' the property. However, someone seems determined to make her sell.
This is a case of unsolved murders, theft, secrets, and a surprising ending. In other words, a darn good read. Enjoy!
If you're sitting around today looking for a series to fall in love with, may I suggest this series opener? Although not a classic locked-room mystery, it all takes place in just a few square miles so it has that feel to it--and what miles they are. Old secrets, an abandoned fabric store, a sense of danger and impending doom, and even abandoned kittens! And don't forget an old mystery to be solved.
Nothing is what it seems. Engaging story, marvelous lead character with a ton of guts and a great sense of family, and just the most marvelous mood and atmosphere in this small California town. If you read it the way I did, you'll experience every emotion in the book before you're done. And as an aside, I don't know squat about fabric, but all the fashion and fabric touches add great interest to the book. I've already got my nose stuck in Crushed Velvet, next in the series. Can't wait to see what happens to Polyester next. Kudos to the author for another winner here.
I have read the Madison Night and Samantha Kidd series by Ms. Vallere. I enjoyed both immensely so plan to read the other series published by her.
This book didn't disappoint. I honestly didn't know who to trust or "whodunit" until it was revealed at the end. I was surprised! I love the character development she employs as well. Poly (main character) grew as a person throughout the story. She realized where she was in life and decided to make the change she wanted for herself. I LOVE a strong female character that keeps on going despite difficulty. Poly is that girl.
I have ordered the other books in this series and plan to "binge" read. Costume series is next while I wait for the next Madison Night and Samantha Kidd books to be released. Thanks, Ms. Vallere for keeping me entertained!
Poly Monroe goes to San Ladron to check out the family fabric store, Land of a Thousand Fabrics, which she has inherited from her uncle. The store has been closed since her aunt was murdered in it ten years ago. A local land developer has made a generous offer for the store, but going back to the store, has brought back many happy memories of learning design, learning about fabrics, and, spending time with her aunt. Seeing all the beautiful, high-quality rolls of fabric that were purchased from around the world by her aunt and uncle makes Poly even more dissatisfied with her current job developing fashion design for a boss whose main concern is making the items cheaply. Before she even leaves the store, the land owner's son walks in acting like his father already owns the place. Then, her car is vandalized, someone is murdered, and, another offer comes in for buying the place. Everyone wants her to sell, but is that really what she wants? And, how can she sell the store without first finding out who murdered her aunt? I could visualize the store and town through the author's description. Poly is an interesting character, although she is a little to fast in jumping to conclusions. I also liked some of the other characters in the town Charlie, the auto mechanic; Genevieve, the tea shop owner; Vaughn, and of course, the kittens.
I enjoyed the premise and the setting. Interesting background about the textile business. I love the characters; I'd like them for friends too, and the author kept me guessing about the villain. (Oh, good red herring!) I knew who else I didn't want to be disappointed in. Good mystery and suspense--and a very satisfying ending.
Note I wondered about a few things--maybe I missed something--but what happened to the missing notebook pages and how could she use the sewing machine with no power and why wasn't that glass from the broken window cleaned up first thing?! And landing face first in gravel is going to result in serious scratches, I'd think. (Been there, did that.) I did appreciate that she took good care of the kittens' needs--and didn't give them milk! (I'm picky about animals being used only as props.) I love their names Pins and Needles. So apropos.
